Beka Gabelia is a Georgian volunteer who joined AWO Bremen in 2025 and carried out his long-term European Solidarity Corps project funded by the European Solidarity Corps programme of the European Union. Read more about his experience below:
“I decided to join the European Solidarity Corps because I wanted to broaden my perspectives, take chances, and explore new possibilities in both my personal and professional life. This motivation led me to Bremen, where I began my volunteering year with AWO Soziale Dienste. From the very beginning, AWO supported me in many ways—helping me adapt to the city, understand my tasks, and learn how to work effectively within a diverse community.
My main responsibilities involved working with young people from different cultural backgrounds and contributing to projects focused on inclusion, community engagement, and intercultural exchange. I helped organize activities, assisted in events, and took part in creative workshops that aimed to bring teenagers together and strengthen communication between them. One of the most meaningful parts of my work was seeing how small initiatives could create real connections and make young people feel understood and included.

Living in Bremen also enriched my understanding of society, migration, and cultural dynamics—topics that are deeply connected to my academic interests in history, politics, and intercultural relations. Being able to observe everyday interactions in a multicultural environment gave me valuable insights that I hope to carry into my future studies.
My volunteering experience was not only about work; it was also a journey of personal growth. I built friendships, learned new skills, and gained confidence in navigating life in a new country. Bremen became a place where I felt supported, challenged, and inspired”.
